Toe's Up!
Obviously I didn't rip JB's socks. He decided that they weren't too short across the bottom of his foot, but rather that they "felt" short as they started up the leg.
So, I just continued plodding on. That's what these toe up socks feel like - plodding along, at a very slow pace. After knitting on them all last week, before we headed down to the races, I had his try them on and remembered to take photos.
I also have the third Monkey on the needles - nice pointy bamboo double points. I have turned the heel and finished the gusset on the 45 minute drive to the races. Then I put the poor little monkey aside and continued on the 2x2 ribbed toe-up. Blog-Free Jessica said in the comments the other day "you can only knit stockinette for so long before quietly losing your mind a little bit." I think the same applies to 2x2 ribbing. If in the end he likes these socks, we discussed this driving home - he likes having hand-knit socks, but doesn't like to wear them because they will just wear out - then I will rip the last two pairs I made him and redo them.

Knitting 2 at a time seems like it would be slow and then the same 2 sts over and over. I can see why you are not loving them.
