It's Not My Fault!

Seriously! It's so not my fault. I know some of your eyes will be glazing over - but I'm rather excited. See - I've been sewing for years. Finally - I've reached a point where my clothing doesn't scream "Hey you - look over here - I made this myself." 80% of what I wear, I made. I was at my new job for 6 weeks before either of the girls knew that. Sew - who's fault is it you ask? Carolyn's. Yep - see, I've been reading her blog since day 1. I love her style, the way she sees something and just goes for it. She's not afraid of anything - at least not when it comes to sewing. So, I've been working on perfecting my skirt pattern. Getting a better fit and changing the pattern up to make it different. But I stick to what I consider "safe" fabrics, cotton, denim, twill. All very comfortable, easy to sew and forgiving. Wool scares the beejeezus out of me. Earlier this week or at the end of last week - Carolyn posted about fabric.com having a sale. I just got 7 pieces of wool for $80! There enough to make 5 skirts and 2 sheath dresses - or 7 skirts! I love that plaid wool suiting that I used as the photo for this post. So - do you think I can actually sew wool? Wish me luck.

  1. I like a nice plaid skirt better than many, so thanks much, but my eyes didn't glaze over!

  2. I love wool skirts! and of course you can make them! Why not? Wool is more forgiving than many other fabrics.

  3. I agree with GoldenTracks - wool is one of the most forgiving fabrics to sew as well as to press. You will do fine!

I expect my fabrics today...can't wait!

  4. That's quite a wool sale. I wonder if my dearly beloved would groan or roll his eyes if I ordered more fabric? After all, I can't even really sew at this point, since I can't stand up long enough to cut anything out. But a sale? Oh, yeah.

I made a grey wool skirt and a black wool skirt. It's pretty easy to work with, because it doesn't move around like other fabrics do. Wool does stretch a little, so be sure to use a good interfacing on the waistband. And I know you'll love it, and look great!

  7. You will love sewing with wool - it is so malleable and foolproof. It presses beautifully and hides so many tiny imperfections (although gabardine admittedly can be a PITA because it is much less forgiving). I truly can't think of another fibre that I love quite as much!

  8. I think you're a very talented seamstress, so I don't know why you're worried about sewing wool. I'm positive that whatever you make will look awesome.
